A ‘Dark Night’ for Our Society…

* NOTE: In this post I refer to Heath Ledger’s death as a suicide. The official report of his death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.
This week, all the buzz has been about the new Batman movie ‘Dark Night’. The new Batman movie has been described as dark and disturbing because of the character ‘The Joker’ played by Heath Ledger which is portrayed as a psychopath who kills without regard or reason. Including impaling a pencil through a person’s head, surgically implanting a bomb in a man, lighting fire to a stack of money tied up to a man and slicing open people’s faces
The ‘Dark Night’ movie has been made more interesting because of the actor Heath Ledger. Many movie goers are watching this film with morbid interest knowing that Heath Ledger committed suicide shortly after he finished filming the Batman movie. Some have said that Heath Ledger’s character, the Joker was such a dark and demented character, that it played a significant role in Heath Ledger’s death.
Once again the entertainment crowd has placed the subject of suicide to the frontage of the societal spectrum. Heath Ledger will probably become a folk hero similar to Elvis Presley and James Dean. The famous picture “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” will now have Mr. Ledger sitting next to Marilyn Monroe.
What is most unbelievable is that Heath Ledger just might win an Academy Award for his performance. That would be typical of our society, honoring a person who killed himself. Our young people will see the coolness of Heath Ledger’s ‘Joker’, painting their faces to look like the character, thinking about how awesome it was for Heath to go out on top. There is nothing cool about killing yourself, God has given us the gift of life and we do not appreciate it. Many of our young people have been tricked into believing that death is better than life.
Our world has become a world without hope a world that thrives off of darkness. Death is interesting, death makes money. The more disturbing a movie is, the more tickets it sells. Good is bad and bad is good.

His death was the result of abuse of prescription medications.excerpt - At about 2:45 PM on January 22, 2008, Ledger was found unconscious in his fourth-floor loft apartment, at 421 Broome Street, in the SoHo neighborhood of Manhattan. Emergency crews arrived soon after but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead at 3:36 PM, and his body removed from the apartment, while crowds of onlookers began gathering outside throughout that night.
After two weeks of intense media speculation about possible causes of his death, on 6 February 2008, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York released its conclusions, based on an initial autopsy of January 23, 2008, and a subsequent complete toxicological analysis. The report concludes, in part, “Mr. Heath Ledger died as the result of acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine.” It also states definitively: “We have concluded that the manner of death is accident, resulting from the abuse of prescription medications.
